One Fly Contest at Pinecrest - This was a very successful event with lots of people and good food. Mark won having landed 11 fish and Ken caught 10. Patti was out of the running early after losing her first fly.
October 10-12 - Northern California Council of Federation of Fly Fishers Conclave in Lodi - Mark gave a report about the Conclave which Tim, Roger and Dave attended on Saturday. Mark shared with us the sad news tha Mel Krieger had passed away earlier that week after dealing with brain cancer. The Club members who participated in last year's fly casting clinic with Mel can feel fortunate at having been one of his last classes. A sympathy on behalf of the Club was sent to his wife.
Election of Officers and Board of Directions: The floor was open for any last minute nominations. There being none Jan McCullough made a motion to accept the platform and Ron Proctor said the elections should be closed. The following will be the new officers and Board of Directors: President - Dave Norwood, Vice President - Ron Elliott, Treasurer - Tim McCullough, Secretary - Carol Norwood, Board of Directors: Jerry Whaley, Leonard Mauro and Ken Napier.
Kistler Ranch Outing with Merced Club - Jerry Whaley announced that we still owed the Merced Club $39 for the three no-shows from our Club (who had not paid either) for this outing. It was agreed that a check would be sent asap.
New Business
Fishing Reports:
Jerry Armstrong told us about his fishing trip to Alaska with the Merced Fly Fishing Club and the extra time he spent in Alaska. He was there from Sept. 5-21 and they had 7.33" of rain. Found two mornings and one afternoon where the river was fishable. Temps were 58-62 during the day and 42 at night.
Jerry A. and Jerry W. talked about going to Pinecrest where they caught 18 fish each. Jerry A. (or was it Jerry W.?) used flies which he tied specifically for both of them.
Mark reported on his trips to Kennedy Meadows and Beardsley wich has been good. Below in the canyon the otters have gotten to the fish.
Outings:
Crystal Lodge on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska - At the Conclave in Lodi Mark spoke to owner of the Crystal Lodge about a Club outing to their Lodge. He is tentatively talking about September 2009 for a week after the salmon season closes. The cost would be approximately $1,000 per person. We would need to eat out or cook for ourselves.
Field Trip to Moccasin Fish Hatchery - There is a sign-up sheet and at this point going are Art, Ken & Val, Roger, Dave & Carol. We will have it out again at the November meeting or will send out a separate email looking for interest. After that we will figure out the best day and time to go. Thank you to Roger for organizing this outing us.
Walk through Galvan Reels - Mark has made arrangements for a tour of their facility on Thursday, October 16th at 3:15 p.m. Meet in Steve Lawrence's parking lot for carpooling to the facility as there is limited parking available.
Trinity River - Roger has spoken to Jim Roberts of the Red Bluff Fly Shop. The best time on the Trinity is November and December - 4 star fishing. In January it is 3 star fishing. Roger has made phone calls to various lodges, motels and hotels regarding availability and prices. Now we just need to know who wants to go when and then we can make some reservations.
Fundraisers: Club is considering going in partnership with Carol's Soroptimist Club (which has the non-profit status needed) to put on a Casino Night. The Boards from both groups will have a meeting to consider further. Curt Cashen made a suggestion of setting up a booh at The Junction to help kids carve pumpkins. With such a short time till Halloween the idea as put aside for next year possibly.
Drawings
Presentation – Mark introduced our guest speaker, Jeff Weaver of the California Department of Fish and Game. Jeff gave us a very informative presentation on the California Heritage & Wild Trout Program. We all got a brochure which contained a map of California with the historic ranges and Heritage Trout Program Waters marked as well as illustrations of California Heritage Trout.
